My name is Irfaan Abrahams and I am an educator currently teaching at Rocklands High School in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town. I have been teaching for the past 18 years, both at primary and high school level. My love for children and being in a position to shape the minds of young people is what attracted me to this most noble of professions. They say teaching is a calling, and I firmly believe that it is so!
From a young age I have been passionate about sports, having competed in various codes such as soccer, cricket, hockey, and squash, and having attained national colours in the latter two. I also coach soccer at Rocklands High School, one of the 16 teams that compete in the Mr Price High Schools Soccer League.
Over the years I have been presenting a sports segment on The Voice of the Cape. In the past I presented Sports Breyani which was a two hour Sports programme that aired every Friday evening and covered all sports issues on a local, national and global stage. Sunday evening and is a three hour show looks at all matters educational.
I consider it as a great opportunity for me to not just stay abreast of all the latest developments on both fronts, but as a medium through which I can reach out to our 330 000-strong listener base. It is a powerful tool through which one can inspire, educate and uplift our community.
A few months ago I was honoured as one of the SA Heroes in Education, in a feature aired on etv, detailing my involvement in sports and education. A spin off from that was a feature article in the Kuier Magazine June 2011edition, focusing on my community involvement.
I have recently discovered a passion for marathon running. This is done in my spare time, which I have to admit is very limited! So far I have completed a number of them.
During timeout at home, I experiment in the kitchen with my mom, play a game of soccer with my son and tease my three lovely ladies, my wife and two daughters.
